Ash Wednesday Reflection: Remembering Roots and Embracing Surrender

"Navigating Life's Distractions: A Humbling Ash Wednesday Journey and Celebration of Surrender"

On Ash Wednesday, it's a powerful reminder of our humble origins. Genesis 3:19 tells us, "By the sweat of your brow, you will eat your food until you return to the ground, for dust you are and to dust you will return." It's easy to forget this truth amid life's distractions, thinking we control our time on earth endlessly.

I recall being a 20-year-old college sophomore in Chicago, immersed in academic pressures and a buzzing social life. My focus was on success, influenced by the belief that education guarantees a prosperous future. Coming from a Mexican immigrant background, it felt like a lifeline amidst my family's struggles.

One Wednesday night, rushing to class, I encountered a priest applying ashes in a train station. The image brought me back to my roots, a reminder of where I came from. I realized I had pursued a false ideal, ignoring God's role in my life. Ash Wednesday marked a sacred moment, humbling me and emphasizing my need for a Savior.

I had been striving for a false sense of success, ignoring God's work in my life. Ash Wednesday boldly confronts our weaknesses and sins, urging us to recognize our place in God's creation. It led me to a life of justice, impacting my work, parenting, faith, and future.

So, I encourage you to pause, reflecting on your journey. Remember moments of humility that revealed your humanity. Ash Wednesday disrupts our routine, providing space for contemplation and mourning, preparing us to appreciate the upcoming joy. It's a day to celebrate surrender, marking the path that brought you to Jesus' feet.

In prayer, approach God openly, acknowledging your mortality and seeking forgiveness. Thank Him for His unending love and new mercies each morning.

The movie, designed for indulgence, stars Kelly Rowland as Mea Harper, a defense attorney in Chicago, and Trevante Rhodes as a successful painter accused of murdering his girlfriend, whose body is yet to be found, but there are skull fragments in one of his paintings.   The plot thickens as the assistant district attorney, Ray Hawthorne, portrayed by Nick Sagar, aims to use the case for a mayoral run and happens to be Mea's brother-in-law.
