"Exploring the Enigmatic Design: Adrian Newey's Curiosity Piqued by Mercedes W15 Innovation"
Adrian Newey, a highly regarded designer in Formula 1, has expressed curiosity about an intriguing innovation present in the recently unveiled Mercedes W15. However, he hasn't divulged specific details about what caught his attention. Mercedes, after facing difficulties with their ground-effect aerodynamic cars for the past two years and failing to secure a single Grand Prix victory last season, has introduced a substantially overhauled car for the current racing season.
The distinctive feature of the new W15 is its front wing, which connects
to the nose at the second and fourth flaps, incorporating what appears to be a
legality wire. This design has raised questions about its compliance with the
regulations, particularly regarding the intended spirit of the rules. Despite
the uncertainties, Newey, who serves as the design mastermind at Red Bull, has
hinted at his interest in the innovation found in the Mercedes car, with
suspicions pointing towards the unique front wing design.
Notably, concerns were raised about the legality of this design, but reports indicate that it has received approval from the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), the governing body for motorsport. Insiders from two teams have affirmed that there seems to be little reason to deem the W15 front wing illegal, and the design has reportedly received the green light from the FIA.
The specific regulations governing this aspect, outlined in Article 3.9.1
of the technical regulations, focus on the design of the flaps. The regulations
state that the rearmost point of every closed section must be visible from
below, with an exception for the rearmost closed section, which must not be
visible from above.
Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, is optimistic that the W15
will help their drivers, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, close the gap on
Red Bull, the dominant championship winners from the previous season. He
expressed the hope of being in the chasing pack at the beginning of the season
and making strides towards narrowing the gap to Red Bull.
The W15 is set to undergo testing at the Sakhir circuit, with George Russell taking the wheel on the opening day of testing.
