Train Union Calls for Another Strike Against Deutsche Bahn, Disrupting Passenger Traffic from Wednesday.
Train drivers' union GDL has called for a new six-day strike in
the ongoing dispute with Deutsche Bahn (DB). The strike is set to begin on
Wednesday, January 24th, and continue until Monday evening, January 29th. This
will cause significant disruptions to rail passenger traffic. Deutsche Bahn
anticipates major cancellations and has announced an emergency timetable,
providing limited services for long-distance, regional, and S-Bahn trains.
Commuters can expect challenging days ahead with thousands of
train cancellations. The strike at DB Cargo, responsible for freight transport,
is scheduled to start on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
In Baden-Württemberg, the effects of the strike are not yet
fully known in all regions. In Stuttgart, regional and S-Bahn traffic, as well
as long-distance services of Deutsche Bahn, will be affected. Light rail and
trains from specific providers should not be impacted. Buses are expected to
run as usual from Monday morning. In Freiburg, all Deutsche Bahn local rail
passenger trains will be affected, while SWEG trains are expected to continue
operating.
GDL accuses Deutsche Bahn of a lack of willingness to reach an
agreement. The union claims that DB's latest offer shows no desire for
agreement. The upcoming strike would be the fourth in the ongoing dispute. The
talks broke down due to disagreements on reducing weekly working hours from 38
to 35 with full wage compensation. While the railways made some concessions on
Friday, offering a reduction to 37 hours per week from 2026 with full wage
compensation or a larger wage increase, an agreement is yet to be reached. The
GDL has a press conference scheduled on Monday morning to address the announced
strike.
