Barley Demands an End to Orban's "Blackmail Attempts"

“Barley Calls for an End to Orban's Tactics and Urges Action Against Hungary's Prime Minister”

Katarina Barley, the leading candidate for the SPD in the European elections, firmly rejects Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban's stance on providing aid to Ukraine. Barley insists that Orban must cease imposing new conditions or resorting to future blackmail attempts. She emphasized the need for an end to Orban's tactics, stating that it's crucial for him to relent without attaching additional conditions. Orban's proposal involves the EU deciding annually on sending financial assistance to Ukraine.

Barley criticized Orban's approach, labeling it as typical of him and highlighting his history of seeking personal gains, usually financial, in exchange for cooperation. She pointed out that such tactics are not acceptable, and the patience with Orban's behavior is wearing thin. Barley expressed her desire to see Orban lose his voting rights in the Council of Europe due to his prolonged erosion of democracy in Hungary and his attempts to influence others through coercion.

She noted that the freezing of funds has already occurred as a response to Orban's actions, citing his impact on Hungary's democracy, rule of law, media, and judiciary. Barley mentioned the possibility of the next step being the suspension of Hungary's voting rights, describing it as the "sharpest sword." However, she acknowledged that this process would be lengthy.

U.S. Imposes 500+ Sanctions on Russia Following Navalny's Death

" U.S. Imposes Extensive Sanctions on Russia Following Navalny's Death "   The Biden administration has announced a sweeping set of over 500 new sanctions on Russia, responding to the recent death of dissident Alexei Navalny . The primary aim is to restrict the significant energy revenue that has been funding President Vladimir Putin's actions in Ukraine. These sanctions target Russian companies, individuals, and entities in other countries involved in supplying Russia's military and industrial sectors.   A crucial aspect of the sanctions involves tightening the existing Western " price cap " on Russian oil purchases, compelling buyers to acquire Russian oil at a discounted rate or face severe financial penalties. This move is designed to impact Russia's most substantial revenue source while avoiding a complete cutoff that could have repercussions on the global economy.   Despite previous stringent sanctions, Putin has not been deterre...
